Package: Scripting Engine problem
Operating System: RHEL 5 x86_64

New Comment:
Turning the engine explicitly on where php is needed in php.conf helps.
Anyway, there clearly is a bug and it should be fixed.

Tried upgrading to 5.3. The bug persists.

By the way, RHEL 5.6 is out and includes PHP 5.3. That's probably your
easiest
way to address this.

Chances are it has been fixed years ago. I remember a few fixes along
those
lines. You are running code that is 5 years old. If you can reproduce
this in a
modern version, re-open the bug report.

php-5.1.6-27.el5_5.3
In the best case RH would include the fix in the distribution.
Anyway, I want the next webmaster to encounter this bug to find at least
one clue in his/her search.
