I also experienced this issue running PHP 4.3.4 on Debian. I resolved it by removing the sticky bit on the sessions directory (`chmod a-t /var/lib/php4`), although obviously this has security implications. Notice: ps_files_cleanup_dir: opendir(F:\php\sessions) failed: Invalid argument (22) in ... on line 11 On line eleven in this script only a session_start() is called. The permissions are set correctly, because the script is able to write, edit and delete the session files with the filesystem functions. I asked in the german php newsgroup and they told me, that this could be a bug.
