unset() does not free memory.

In the example, list() is important.

Reproduce code:

for($i=1;$i<10000000;$i++)
{
        list($b['a']) = array ("aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa");
        unset($b['a'],$b);
}


Actual result:
