I cleaned up everything again ...and finally ...I got it. Probably I did something wrong on my previous tests and I was confused by the fact the new GIF animation functions are not supported. So, sorry and thanks for your time. I understand how it works now... :-? I have the feeling that you should first fix your setup. I believe 4.3.9 adds support for writing GIFs, but not GIF animations. A bug in the manual? ..it suggests it is possible to compile PHP with a different GD library than the one PHP provides as an extension.
