That's a very odd-looking backtrace. Doesn't appear to be a PHP problem but rather a problem in the toolchain somewhere. I think you'll have to send me your MacBook Pro so I can get to the bottom of it. Have tried doing a direct install of pear with same result. Same configuration works fine with a PowerPC Mac using same OS, dev tools and build script.
