The developers should get used to the one source module idea. Adding an alias which reinforces the idea that each major version lives in its own module is a counterproductive measure.
I don't see it as one, nor was it agreed upon. The new setup is a good way to keep things behind the scenes, but there's no reason to prevent people from easily checking out the latest version. It's just behind the scenes - many (my guess - most) people will still use two separate checkouts if they work on both versions, so it won't have any real world meaning.
