No, perhaps we should finally stop bundling LGPL extensions to avoid these annoyances?

Not quite. IMO it can be avoided if you pay a little more attention to it. However, I think the extension has grown too big to bundle and planning to move it to PECL when the circumstances go well for it. Now's not the time though.
