[PHP-DB] mysql_insert_id()

Is there a known way to "reset" this field?  If I make a call and it
succeeds,
then it should be set.  If it fails, shouldn't it at least be reset to 0
or -1 instead
of simply the last successful insert?  Is this the expected behavior?
