[PHP-DB] What's the PHP function for clearing out the garbage code inside the variable?

Hi!

    When I receive the data from the database, when it is empty and assigned
to a variable.  I found that the variable contain garbage data in it.  So,
what's the PHP function that will flush it out before I can assign it to the
variable?
