I think you forgot to assign the value of ereg_replace to a variable. I made
this test and it worked:
<?
$t = 'abc*cde*';
printf("%s\n", ereg_replace("\*", "\%", $t)); // or $result =
ereg_replace("\*", "\%", $t);
?>
