You're basically setting a superglobal array equal to an empty string ->
"". this should at least be $_POST == ""...but....
instead, i'd use....
if ((!isset($_POST['edit'])) or (empty($_POST)) {
<--and -->
} elseif ((isset($_POST['edit'])) or (!empty($_POST))) {
