Since PHP 4.0.4 the GD extension isn't enabled by default anymore.
You need to add --with-gd into your configure line. 

It should work the same as before IF you haven't changed anything
else in your system, like updated GD libraries without removing the old
ones first.

This is no bug -> Bogus.

If I recall correctly, you need to specify --with-gd=/path/to/install to the latest 
versions of PHP

pleaser try this, and report back. Please also report your configure line if it fails.
