My best guess is DNS. Can you try with some other LDAP tool? It could be the server trying to lookup the reverse for your IP-address, or a DNS problem on the client side. Can you try for instance telnet hostname 389 on the client and see how quickly you get a connection? Does it make a difference if you specify an IP address in the ldap_connect call? I am connecting to a remote 3rd party LDAP server over a routed network. The initial connect/bind takes almost 20 seconds! Is there something I have failed to configure?
