i'd like to have $whatever[...][...][x] and $whatever[...][...][y] in
all cases, maybe
with ini switches for old, new or both ...

Maybe we should just make $foo_x[123] and $foo_y[123]
available in addition to $foo[123]? That should keep BC
and still do things right, though we might want to change
the value of $foo[123] to something like 'x,y' instead of
just y???

Well, I don't believe this would be such a BC breaker. I mean, the
behavior is clearly broken and by the timespan of this report and by
the lack of discussion about this through the years, I don't think that
many people experienced this.
I would vote for a fix. :)

Confirmed in PHP 4.1.0
Do we want to change this behavior? IMO, this is wrong,
but it has been like this for a long time. Do we want to
break BC to fix it?
