STV is useful when voting on multiple options or candidates, rather than a single yes/no vote, such as with the upcoming secretary election: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/php-fig/m6ezWrBEshQ It is a lot fairer than a raw votes count - as it allows you to order your preferences for the different candidates, rather than having to pick only one.
