If you're using a RedHat linux distribution .. have you also installed the php-mysql package .. I'm not totally sure about it's name, just give a search for either mysql or php on the redhat network (rhn.redhat.com) and you'll see that there's a package for php to connect with mysql ... Not sure if it will help you, but you can at least try ... or smth,
