figured it out. I needed to install Bison and then Flex in order to compile
php. Bison: http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bison/ Flex:
http://gnuftp.ccp14.ac.uk/gnu/flex/ later

I just downloaded the latest version, 4.3.5, installing on RH9 - fresh
install

So my question, are Bison and Flex required and if so any particular reason?
I never had this problem on previous versions (not that I installed on that
many different distributions)

Thanks
