Ok, got it solved after going through all the examples at the online manual for eval()
Heres the final code (case you are interested):
if($sql_exists == 0){}else{$cust_qry=$o_sql;
eval("\$cust_qry = \"$cust_qry\";");
$cust_result = mysql_query($cust_qry);
