I am also trying to do this. Dovecot is the default IMAP server on FC2. I haven't had time to try it yet, but here is a link I found about compiling PHP with dovecot: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2004-July/004282.html I should have a chance to try later today and will let you know if I have any luck.
