Most likely, everything is working *FINE* but you are viewing your output in a BROWSER. So your BROWSER is interpreting < and > as an HTML tag and *not* showing you what's between them, because it's a tag the browser doesn't understand. Use "View Source" in your browser to verify this as a one-time solution.
