I just wanted to add that IMHO use of __autoload() is over rated (too much magic is not alway a good thing) in the general case, i.e. use it for specific types of classes like dataobject classes that are generated on the fly - but don't use it as a catchall handler

I haven't tested this, but you make a good point. I would guess this advice to be particularly good if you are using one of the opcode cachers out there (since they may / may not be able to cache code for files included via __autoload).
