[PHP] array_count_values

can someone give a quick hint as to why this does not work:
 
$array = split ("\n", $contents);
$stuff = array_count_values ($array); 
echo $stuff[nuts];
 
or even:
 
$array = array (split ("\n", $contents));
$stuff = array_count_values ($array); 
echo $stuff[nuts];
