Jerry, try sprintf(). Here's an example:

sprintf("(%s) %s-%s", substr($GLOBALS["appPhoneHome"], 0,
3),substr($GLOBALS["appPhoneHome"], 3, 3),substr($GLOBALS["appPhoneHome"],
6, 4))
