    Look at this part of the code:

$result = mysql_query($sql);
if ($result == 0)

    The error message gave you the answer.  You don't have the proper
curly brackets for your if/else statements.  Replace the above with
this:

$result = mysql_query($sql);
if ($result == 0) {
    echo '<b>Error ' . mysql_errno() . ': '. mysql_error() . '</b>';
} else {
