Was that the whole script or was there extra stuff you took out?
My only suggestion would be to add:
echo "At line " . __LINE__ . " appname is '" . $appname . "'\n";
type messages every 10-20 lines and see where it disappears.
Maybe you're overwriting the variables somewhere.
