Someone with the proper authority should probably put on the manual pages that to get the gettext functionality you have to configure with the --with-gettext flag. The --with-XYZ comes in almost all pages that require an additional flag, so at first I was mislead into believing it is compiled in by default. Hope I saved someone some time and the ugly "Fatal error: Call to undefined function: bindtextdomain() in ..." messg.
