$thumbnail = eregi_replace('\.jpg$', 'a.jpg', $myrow['ilmage']);
$thumbnail = eregi_replace('\.gif$', 'a.gif', $thumbnail);

It's no problem to do it twice in a row; it'll pick up one or the other.
