I've run into this before as well.  Pain in the ass when you want to put
example code in your header.  It's gotta be a deisgn flaw.

// literal.. legal
$tmp = '?>';

// reg ex.. legal
ereg('?>', $tmp);

// Comment.. illegal.  Why?  Makes no sense.
/*?>*/
