It's so obvious you're gonna kick yourself (I did!). You need to enclose the
two values in quotes, like so...
$query = "INSERT INTO friends (id, firstname, surname) values
(nextval('friends_id_seq'), '".$_POST['firstname']."', '".$_POST['surname']."')";
