While I don't know if this is really what you need, it does do exactly
what you want to do in your example:
$Replace['\\'] = '';
$Replace['::'] = '.';
$Replace['['] = '';
$Replace[']'] = '';
$UserInput = '[::word1 \" word2 \" word3::]';
echo strtr($UserInput, $Replace);
