Did you make sure that the sed in your PATH is either /usr/xpg4/bin/sed
or GNU sed?

Does the config.log give some hints? Can you insert a "set -x" before
the line
echo $ac_n "checking base type of last arg to accept""... $ac_c" 1>&6
and see what happens?
