Sure. However, since this isn't a Bash group, it seemed a little OT. Let's say you wanted to see lines which were in files in a directory (and all subdirectories) and know their linenumber: grep -rin 'searchstring' /path/to/dir/* If the string spans multiple lines, as I think is common by the phrase "QUOTE" then one would have to be a bit more clever to capture the content between the opening and closing tags. It could be done with regular expressions in sed or awk. The key is figuring out how to allow the pattern sought to span multiple lines. I don't know these details off the top of my head and I have other work which demands my time just now. James _____ James D.
