I'm curious..  why is AJAX better than 'straight' JS, but yet CSS is
okay?  AJAX implies that a request is made to the server for
information.  Is a request really necessary?  If the thumbnails are
arranged such that there's a link wrapped around them pointing to the
larger image the JS can read this and load the image.  And if there's
no JS then clicking on it will open the image.
