More than anything, it takes experience to calculate the time it takes for a
project. Here's a few things to consider though when trying to calculate your
time.
1. How much information does the client already have to provide for you?
Do they have just a concept, or do they already have a flowchart of their
exact needs?
Do they have design art already, or do you have to provide/design it?
Do they have a deadline in mind?
2. How experienced are you in developing code from scratch?
Can you just use existing code and manipulate it, or do you need time to
learn as you go?
One method I have used recently, when a client really has nothing but a
concept, is to tell them just to get the framework up, basic art, and ready for
content, I'd estimate that it could take me ten hours, and charge them an
hourly rate up front for those hours. After that, additional charges are going
to be hourly based on their need for content, or $xx amount total for the task
that they need done, and they can pay for that once those tasks are complete.
This is just my method, and it's not necessarily the only or even right way.
But when I was in the same place as you, not know what to charge, this is what
I came up with. I hope there are others in the group that can offer additional
insight as to their methods.
Good Luck, and Happy Programming!
