Is there any particular reason to do XML->TEX->PDF? I
have not had problems converting the big HTML manual
(all in one file) to PDF usng htmldoc (latest version:
1.8.9, www.easysw.com), if you convert it as a web
page, not as a book, which is when it complains about
more than 1000 entries, etc.

Just did a "make bigmanual.html" and then converted to
PDF. The section under discussion looks OK, it says
(pasting from the doc):

"... notation of variable++ and variable-- ..."
