ok, the lists are up again, so lets re-start work
i've done some experiments on one of the topics
we had discussed here before the list went down

this is an experimental modification of the php manual source
all the files in the function directory have been split up
in a general part and a subdirectory containing the actual
refentries, one function refentry per file
this enables configure to insert original english documentation
for missing translations on the function level
the actual php manual source will only do so on the extension
level. this way newly added functions in the english version
will not show up in translations until they are actualy
translated -> BAD THING (TM)
configure isn't very fast on finding out which file to use
where while checking for translations, but this could easiely
be imporved as soon as we have decided to use this new scheme
the xml processing itself is slowed down due to the increased
number of file includes, but this effect is almost unmeasurable
right now this experimental package has only english original
and german translated files
i'm not sure yet wether we should follow the way presented
here, which would break CVS history a bit (which is not as
important for documentation as it is for actual code)
or whether it would be better to leave the xml files as
they are and have them split up and recombined in the
background during the actual built, but that is a different
story ...
