I don't buy the text browser argument, since they can't render <sup>
sensibly anyway.  The graphic is tiny, doesn't cost more than a user
contributed note and makes for a much nicer rendition.

I haven't had a chance to look through your patch yet Nuno; hopefully I
will get some time tonight.
