Follow-up Comment #3, bug #7822 (project phpgroupware):
If you use \ to represent your character (it is the html equiv. of \) it
works fine. I replicated your problem in 0.9.16.010. I suppose the back-end
should be replacing this / all special characters for display purposes... I
found a table of equiv's here:

If I get to feeling ambitious I might just work on a storage function to
convert all of the special characters to their equiv's... but I have my hands
tied with the patches I am trying to produce for phpbrain.
