For the record, in case somebody is trolling the archives in the
future, USB does work in 2.4.0-test10, and quite well. 

For some reason, in the dim past (2.3.99something), I skipped over the
USB /proc filesystem support in the kernel config, and have been doing
so ever since. Turning that on makes all sorts of wonderful things
possible! Gnome-pilot, for example, is most nifty. Adieu, jpilot
