Sounds like a good idea. The question is how to architecture that kind of thing. As for messages/signals in another thread here on pinax-devel maybe the best way to approach this would indeed be messages and queues (read http://celeryproject.org). I say this because it sounds that this kind of toggling privacy settings might include a lot of computing behind scenes and thus be better done asynchronous using queues.
