(re messages in December '01)  Try polycarbonate resin (GE Lexan or
equiv).  This is the shatterproof window glazing material, be sure it
isn't just acrylic (Rohm & Haas Plexiglas or equiv), although that might
work as well for this relatively undemanding application.  Cheap,
lightweight, easily trimmed etc at home, safer to work with, unbreakable
(bulletproof?) in the field.  Use crocus cloth, available at your local
hardware store, lubricate with white kerosene.  G Penate was looking for
something finer than 600 grit.  Crocus cloth is equivalent to about 1200
grit.
