The term "natural camera" appears for the first time that I know of in
Petzval's 1857 presentation "On the Camera Obscura", where he defines the
natural camera, which uses only a small hole to gather images, as one which
is "elementary in character, convenient in form and inexpensive to
produce"- -"it furnishes an excellent example of what nature presents and of
what art must supply". He then goes on to discuss how the introduction of a
lens to the setup distorts nature in the search for greater sharpness. A
wonderfully succinct endorsement of "low tech". I don't remember where I
got this article, maybe from Eric Renner.
