Hello everyone. My name is Laurie. I am a 42 year old mother of two. When I was
5, I was hit over the head with a coal shovel and lost consciousness. Following
the incident, I had great difficulty waking up in the morning. I had been an
early bird prior. I had frequent headaches the first year. I had difficulty
focusing in loud classrooms. During grade school, high school and first year
post college, I had unexplained episodes of passing out. I realized shortly
thereafter that it was likely hypoglycemia and/or hypotension. I had an
outpatient procedure in college and my BP was 80/40. I tested my bloodsugar one
day at work(after college) and my glucose was 60 one hour after eating. So it's
likely I was having low cortisol issues even then(low BP/low glucose). I
started experiencing hypothyroid syptoms at about age 22. I knew enough to have
my thyroid tested. YUP, "everything normal" as they only tested my TSH. BTW,
Hashimoto's runs rampant in the family. I got married at age 29. I had baby
#1 at age 34. We were lazy about birth control. I produced little breast milk
when I tried to nurse our son. I tried pumping and only produced a
teaspoon. When I attempted to nurse, I had no "letdown". When I stopped
nursing, I didn't become engorged. With baby #2, I couldn't go into labor on
my own. It took the second attempt of max pitocin to bring it on. I always
had difficulty with Winter. Frequent upper resp infections which progresses to
sinus infections, bronchitis and right middle lobe pneumonia. In Winter of
2004-2005, it was unending. I had 6 courses of antibiotics to finally get over
my pneumonia. In spring of 2005, a doc tested my TSH and finally a FT4. My
TSH was 1.5 and FT4 was 0.7(0.8-1.87). Still no treatment or evaluation. Fall
of 2005, hypothyroid symptoms got worse. Hair started falling out and I was
cold all the time. Found a good DO who is holistic in approach. She was
fascinated with inability to breast feed and inability to go into labor....
She started me on thyroid hormone replacement in 2006. My lipids have always
been low. T.Choles 118-120's average, DHEA-S 50-70 (32-240) 24hour steroid
hormone analysis showed ALL my sex hormones to be low. I started compounded
progesterone and a touch of DHEA. I had MRI of my pit 12/07. No adenomas. But
not quite pea shaped either. I'll get copy of my MRI tomorrow. Prolactin 2007
 7.9 (2.8-29.2) Am Cortisol 14 (4-24) Doc said "indeterminate" 12/07 IGF-1
155 (101-267). I had low cortisol issues in January of this year. I did
saliva cortisol in April. 7am 5 (13-24), 12n 5( 5-10), 5p 4 (3-8) and mid
2(1-4). I was at death's door. I was dizzy,cold shivering,hypoglycemic. No time
to do ACTH or ACTH stim. Started cortef for adrenal insufficiency. MUCH
BETTER! I haven't had a sinus infection in two years. Thyroid hormone
replacement made a huge difference. I've stress dosed with cortef if I felt
like I was coming down with something and by the next day, I had NO symptoms.
I did testing for aldosterone/renin in May 2008 for a year of salt cravings,
dizziness, heat intolerance. Aldosterone 7 (4-31) Renin 1.6( 8-24). Doc says
"normal" I met with my DO a few weeks ago. I've been having hot flashes.
Individual sex hormones pending. I had LH/FSH and repeat IGF-1 done on my
own. 8/7/08 IGF-1 154 (101-267) LH (luteal, day 21) 0.7
(0.5-16.9) FSH 1.0 (1.5-9.1) I've gained
weight. Not able to lose weight. I am a critical care transport nurse. I work
two days/week and log approx 11miles/day (hauling sick sick patients)with my
pedometer. I also work out 2-3days/week. 8/7/08 Fasting glucose 96
Fasting insulin 5 (<15) Any thoughts? Much thanks, Laurie
