I'm working on the trunk and following the directions in the BUILD file, see my original post for the exact commands.
Maven is not used. Ant uses the maven-ant-tasks, so the poms on the trunk are only needed for installation, not compilation, so no changes are required to build. It looks like maven-ant-tasks made a recent change that pulled the rug out from under this build.
