If I want to build my software manually, I'd either use Gentoo or Linux from Scratch. What's the point of a binary distribution if the binary does not work? I know I can build the package myself, either from upstream or the Debian source. I am only questioning if it is a good idea to deal portability for increased performance on SSE2 systems.
