Based on this information, and given that only a finite set of cyrus releases have likely been packaged for debian, it seems like it should be possible to determine which set of database files were generated for any possible debian installation. Since all the debian cyrus db files are always in /var/lib/cyrus, it would seem that the postinst upgrade script can be simpler even than the one that redhat uses.
