debuild -v[version in stable] with a changelog of the version in testing copied the whole changelog as apparently there were uploads that did not follow the usual patch from unstable -> testing -> stable. It would be good if debuild could look for the equal or first lower version in the changelog instead of just passing it on to dpkg-genchanges which falls back to the default for an unknown version.
