Richard has been seeing this consistently when trying to install SUNWgcc on
his box at home. He's got a cable connection from comcast, and for some
reason, every time he tries the install, it manages to download part of it,
but eventually hangs for about twenty minutes, and then gets a traceback
with connection reset by peer.

The twenty minutes points to the TCP timeout, but why would it be timing
out?

Some ideas we've come up with:

- Bart suggested that it might be too high an MTU (1500 behind a PPPoE
connection can be bad), but Richard tried lowering his MTU to 1492, and
it didn't help. He also said that he's been able to download large
files before.

- The depot isn't initiating the drop; in fact, it gets a broken pipe
message, indicating that something in between is causing the problem.

- The Apache reverse proxy might be initiating the drop, but it's not
logging anything. Unfortunately, the logging isn't terribly
transparent for filelist operations, so it's hard to say exactly what's
going on. And it would still leave the question of why the hang is
happening.

- Bart also suggested that maybe comcast is buggering some content
filtering, poisoning the connection, and sending a RST to the client,
perhaps thinking that he's doing something against their TOU. Anyone
else have success with IPS and comcast link?

- Possibly the connection is too slow (uh-oh)? Richard says he's got at
least 2Mb, which ought to be plenty, but you never know. Anyone try
this on a really slow connection? It downloaded just fine on my ~3Mb
connection.

Any other ideas?

Danek
