There's a pre-built version of IPS for Linux here: http://download.java.net/updatecenter2/promoted/MS9/ips-linux-i386.zip

To run the depot out of this image, unzip it, and then run:

pkg/bin/pkg.depotd

This includes a minimized python in case the right version of python isn't already on your Linux system.

I would like to promote IPS locally in switzerland (IPS is slow from here), but I see no technical indications (how to do) on how to be a IPS repository on a non-Solaris plate-form (let say Linux). Can we do that ? if yes, what is the procedure ?

Any info would be higly appreciated.

We're still working on the mirroring part of this, but I don't know of
any reason that pkg.depotd shouldn't be able to run on Linux, but
still serve OpenSolaris content. Have you tried taking a clone of the
repository and doing a build on a Linux system?
