Oh, I disagree.

I just used the verbose option and updated my whacky VIA C7 based
machine which you can see ( in verbose detail ) here

The onty thing to be careful of is that the GRUB menu items don't seem
to pick up the fact that I am using a serial console and, yes, I
specified a verbose boot there also :-)
